AICPIN Report for July 2023
In the month of July 2023, the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) witnessed an upward movement of 3.3 points, resulting in a total index of 139.7. This corresponds to a month-on-month percentage change of 2.42%, which is higher compared to the 0.90% increase observed during the same period last year.
The Labour Bureau, an entity affiliated with the Ministry of Labour & Employment, diligently collects retail prices from 317 markets located in 88 industrially significant centers across India to compile the CPI-IW on a monthly basis. This index is compiled both at the individual center level and for the entire country, with the report being released on the last working day of the subsequent month. The announcement of the CPI-IW for July 2023 is being made through this official press release.
The primary factor driving the increase in the current index is the Food & Beverages group, which contributed 2.86 percentage points to the overall change. Several items within this group, including Rice, Arhar Dal/Tur Dal, Apple, Mango, Brinjal, Garlic, Ginger, Gourd(Lauki), Chilies Green, Potato, Onion, Tomato, Cumin seed/Jira, Supari, Saree Cotton, Shirt, T-shirt-readymade, School uniform, Leather Sandle, Chappal, Canvas Shoes, House rent, Auto-rickshaw/Scooter fare, Repair/Service Charges, Utensils, and Medicine allopathic played a significant role in driving the index higher. However, this increase was partially offset by factors such as Electricity (domestic) Charges and Kerosene oil, resulting in some downward pressure on the index.
